Foil Wrapped Baked Banana S’mores

foil wrapped baked bananna s’mores
Gooey chocolate banana goodness!

Here’s a camping favorite – foil wrapped baked banana s’mores!  Unusual, tasty, and super easy to make, these treats are perfect for your next camp out or barbecue!

I love camping, and half the fun is eating an unusual treat.  Don’t get me wrong, the classic s’more has its place in my heart (especially if you substitute in dark chocolate…), but this treat mixes things up.  Plus, with the addition of a banana, we can pretend it’s healthy!

We’re firmly out of the realm of gourmet here, but these are inexpensive and super easy to prepare.  The gooey baked remnants of a banana s’more are dangerously close to what my friend refers to as “stoner food”, if you need a quick campfire joke. And we can cook them right on the coals!

They’re also cheap, nearly mess free, and simple to prepare!  If you’re out camping, pre-cut the aluminum foil and bag the ingredients separately, and the only dishes you’ll need to deal with is a knife for cutting the bananas, and spoons or forks for eating them.

These gooey treated are perfect for banana lovers!  The base recipe uses chocolate chips, but my kids are fond of sneaking in other items, like a Kit-Kat or M&M’s.  They’re also basically a slow cook food, so it’s hard to get these wrong when you’re sitting around a camp fire.  Or, if you’re at home or don’t have a campfire, they work equally well on the grill, it’s just not as much fun.

As a major tip – make sure you use ripe bananas, or even slightly overripe.  Green bananas have a very different taste and result when cooked, and at least to my taste buds don’t pair very well with sweets.  Also, pack in the chocolate and marshmallows, there aren’t nearly enough in the pictures below.

Let’s cook!

Ingredients for Foil Wrapped Baked Banana S’mores:

  • Bananas, 1 per person
  • Chocolate chips or other candy
  • Mini marshmallows (or cut up the big ones in advance)
  • Aluminum Foil

Step 1: Let’s keep this simple!  Slice the banana from tip to tip, and pull it apart slightly.  Stuff it with chocolate and marshmallows.  I prefer to alternate as I go from tip to tip.

Carefully slice from tip to tip! Use a slightly riper banana for better results.

Step 2: Double wrap the loaded banana in aluminum foil. The outer layer will protect the inside.

Chocolate chips, Kit-Kat, or small candies all work well!

Step 3: Cook on campfire coals (not fire!) or on a grill for about 20 minutes, 10 minutes per side.  This is where you’ll need to adjust based on the heat of your fire, but you have plenty of wiggle room with a slow cook-style recipe.

Medium heat over a grill, or right on hot coals in a fire.

Step 4: Eat and enjoy!  Aluminum foil doesn’t retain heat very well, but the banana will, so be careful when unwrapping them!  The insides have been in the heat for 20 minutes, so treat it like a piping hot pie.

Enjoy!
