Homemade Whipped Cream
Homemade Whipped Cream is quick, easy, and never fails to impress. Add your own flavors and colors to really make the meal uniquely yours.
My favorite thing about a recipe like homemade whipped cream is how easy it is to make, and how much it always impresses other people. Showing up with a pie and mentioning that the bowl next to it has, “cinnamon homemade whipped cream” always impresses people!
Actually…my favorite part of this recipe is taste testing as you go. You have to make sure the mix is just right, after all! I’ll give you a sample recipe with ratios below, but really…go crazy! Add a little more powdered sugar, and take a taste…or a little more vanilla…or some chocolate…cinnamon…be creative!
Whipped cream is easy to make, but there are a few tricks to it. The first is to get everything REALLY cold. I leave the bowl, measuring cup, and beaters in the freezer for at least 15 minutes before mixing. A thick, heavy bowl that holds temperature is best, but go with what you have! The cold will help the cream whip.
If you want that fancy whipped cream look, you’ll need a piping bag and tip. BUT – a bowl with a spoon works great for social gatherings.
One of the most important aspects is you need to use actual heavy cream – milk or half and half won’t have the fat content to whip. All Recipes has some interesting possibilities for making heavy cream, and some of those might whip. Let me know!
Whipped cream will double in volume from the original ingredients, so be sure to use a large bowl. This will also help catch the splatters as you mix.
On to the actual recipe:
Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe:
Key ratio is 1 cup of heavy cream to ¼ cup powdered sugar…but you can absolutely use more or less to taste. Sometimes it’s good without any sugar at all!
- 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
Step 1: Place a large mixing bowl and beaters in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you start. Pour the cream in the bowl, and mix on high for about 5 – 7 minutes.
You can stop the process at any point where you feel the whipped cream is stiff enough. If you go too far, just add a little more cream.
Step 2: Once the cream is whipped, add in the powdered sugar and vanilla, and mix until completely combined.
- Taste as you go!
- Substitute other flavors for vanilla, like peppermint or butterscotch
- For adult events, try a splash of rum!
- ⅛ tsp of cinnamon mixed in, or sprinkled over the top
- For children, try food coloring!
- 1 tbs of cocoa powdered gives you chocolate whipped cream
Have fun, and experiment!
